UNDERSTANDING EMOTIONS:
The Importance of Embracing and Honouring All Feelings
Have you ever found yourself struggling to accept or understand your own emotions? Or have you noticed how others react when faced with someone expressing intense feelings like anger, sadness, or fear? In a society that often emphasizes the importance of positivity and happiness, it's easy to feel like anything other than good is considered wrong or unacceptable. However, in this blog post, we want to challenge that notion and emphasize the significance of welcoming and acknowledging all emotions.
Emotions
Emotions are an integral part of the human experience. They serve as our body's way of communicating with us, providing valuable insights into our needs, desires, and experiences. By categorizing certain emotions as positive and others as negative, we risk overlooking the richness and complexity of our emotional landscape.
Let's take a closer look at some of the emotions that are often misunderstood or dismissed:
Anger:
Anger is often seen as a destructive and undesirable emotion. However, it can be a powerful force for change and growth. When channeled appropriately, anger can motivate us to address injustices, set boundaries, and advocate for ourselves and others.
Sadness and Grief:
Society often encourages us to avoid or suppress feelings of sadness and grief. But these emotions are essential for healing and personal growth. They allow us to process loss, find solace, and develop resilience. By embracing our sadness and grief, we can find comfort and learn to appreciate life's precious moments.
Self-Rejection and Hopelessness:
It's common to feel ashamed or guilty when experiencing self-rejection or hopelessness. However, these emotions can serve as signals that something within us needs attention. By acknowledging and exploring these feelings, we can embark on a journey of self-acceptance and rediscover hope.
Fear:
Fear is a natural response to perceived threats or dangers. While it can be uncomfortable, fear serves an important purpose - to keep us safe. By recognizing and understanding our fears, we can take steps to protect ourselves and make informed decisions. Fear can also be a catalyst for personal growth, pushing us to step out of our comfort zones and pursue our dreams.
Regulation of Emotions:
DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy), provides helpful acronyms worth remembering. The ABC PLEASE is explored here as a reminder of the importance of looking after our own needs first, maintaining a balanced lifestyle being foundational. It's said you can't pour from a empty cup, neither are you able to care for others to the best of your ability, if life is in a chaotic state. To avoid allowing emotions to dictate our responses and actions; building resilience is required.

B— Build mastery by doing things we enjoy. Whether it is reading, immerse yourself in a captivating novel or educational book, cooking, experiment with new recipes or perfecting your signature dish, cleaning, organize and declutter your living space to create a sense of order and calm, fixing a car, learn basic car maintenance or tackle a DIY project, working a crossword puzzle, challenge your mind and expand your vocabulary, or playing a musical instrument, practice playing your favorite songs or learn new techniques to improve your skills.
C— Cope Ahead by rehearsing a plan ahead of time so that we can be prepared to cope skillfully. For instance, if you have an upcoming presentation or public speaking engagement, rehearse your speech or practice deep breathing techniques to manage anxiety. If you anticipate a challenging conversation, plan out your key points and practice active listening skills. If you are facing a difficult task or decision, break it down into manageable steps and visualize yourself successfully completing it.
